Gruesome find in veld near Southport

January 12, 2005 Edition 1

What appeared to be the decomposing remains of a new-born baby were found early yesterday in an open piece of veld on the Kwa-Zulu-Natal South Coast, police said.

According to Capt Vincent Pandaram, the remains of the child were found about 10 metres from a house in Fairview Mission, in Southport, on the South Coast.

"The body, which is in an advanced state of decomposition, is missing both arms from the shoulder and the right leg from the groin," he said.

The body was removed to the Port Shepstone police mortuary where a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death, the age and sex of the baby, as well as how the limbs may have been severed from the body.

Pandaram added that the gruesome discovery was made by one of the occupants of a nearby house, who alerted the police immediately.

An appeal is made for anyone with any information that may help in the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Detective Inspector Sandile Ngcobo, or the Detective Branch Commander, Captain Sunil Singh of SAPS Southport on 039 681 9900. - Daily News Reporter
