A clumsy robber shot himself in the groin after he and his gang had forced a bakkie off the road by shooting at it, wounding the driver.

The suspect and his accomplices had attacked a Chinese businesswoman and her employee near Park Rynie on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast on Wednesday.

The victims were driving from the Eastern Cape to Durban when they were attacked by three men travelling in an Opel Corsa Lite, said police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum.

"It is alleged that an Opel Corsa and a Toyota Corolla followed the victims' Isuzu bakkie from Port Edward and when (they were) close to Park Rynie, the suspects in the Corsa opened fire on the bakkie.

"The bakkie was hit by three bullets in the bodywork and a tyre was punctured. The driver was wounded in his stomach," he said.

The suspects travelling in the Toyota followed the victims' vehicle until it came to a halt and forced their way into the bakkie.

The suspects allegedly drove the victims on to the Landers sugarcane farm, off the R612 Park Rynie/Umzinto Main Road.

A passing motorist alerted Road Traffic Inspectorate officer Charles Mnyandu to the attack and he scoured the area until he found the bakkie with the businesswoman and the wounded driver.

"Mnyandu traced two of the suspects to the Umzinto Clinic. One of them was seriously wounded in the groin when he accidentally shot himself while tucking the gun in the waistband down the front of his pants.

"Both men were arrested by Detective Inspector Yugen Moodley of the Scottburgh SAPS," said Pandarum. The third suspect fled in the Opel Corsa.

The victims were robbed of a cellphone and money.

"It is believed that the arrested suspects are part of a syndicate and we are investigating the possibility that they may be connected to other local armed robberies.

"Charges of armed robbery and attempted murder are being investigated," Pandarum said.
