A man involved with the gang that raped two women in Nongoma was given two life sentences for rape and 35 years for armed robbery and escape by the Nongoma Regional Court, police said on Friday.

"We believe that the sentence will send a clear message that rape and robbery is not tolerated," said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

He said Senzo Ntshaba, 23, and two other men gang raped two women and robbed them while near Nongoma town in Zululand.

The boyfriend of one of the women was forced to watch the ordeal, he said.

"The boyfriend was also robbed. They took cellphones, a camera
and a jacket," he said.

Mdunge said Ntshaba had refused to tell the court the whereabouts of the other two men allegedly involved in the incident.

He said Ntshaba was arrested after the boyfriend of one of the victims got wind of information that he [Ntshaba] was selling a camera.

"When the boyfriend heard that Ntshaba was selling a camera, he decided to approach him pretending that he wanted to buy it."

He then informed police when he saw it was his camera, said Mdunge.

The jacket was also recovered from Ntshaba during his arrest, he said.

Ntshaba was arrested in October 2006 about a month after the incident and he escaped from police custody in November 2007. - Sapa
