Bridget Oppenheimer robbed at home
August 08, 2008 Edition 1
Bridget Oppenheimer, the mother of De Beers Consolidated Mines chairman, Nicky Oppenheimer, was held up at knifepoint and robbed on her La Lucia estate, Milkwood Lodge, in the early hours of yesterday morning.
According to the estate manager, Stephen Campbell, Oppenheimer is in excellent health, although shaken by her ordeal.
Her lawyer, Duncan Butcher, of the Johannesburg-based firm E Oppenheimer & Son, said the octogenarian had been woken by the sound of the intruders breaking into her home.
Butcher said three men, one armed with a knife, threatened Oppenheimer and fled with a flat screen television and a small amount of cash from her purse. Contrary to other reports, no jewellery was stolen.
The lawyer said: "Mrs Oppenheimer was unhurt, and the robbery under investigation.
"We would like to emphasise that, although the incident was very distressing, it is something that happens to all South Africans, from all walks of life, far too often."
Several high-profile citizens in the province have been victims of house burglaries during the past year, including KZN Premier, S'bu Ndebele, and Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC, Bheki Cele, both of whom live in Durban North. - Daily News Reporter
